Firstly, I am an artist and worried about the impact on my craft, but there is a lot of misuse of language here. AI is not *stealing* copyrighted work. The works do not cease to exist, it does not take it away. Also, I have to ask you... how did you learn to draw? Did you never look at someone else's work and use that as inspiration? Are you aware that all art is copyrighted automatically by its creator?? Did you always have their permission (directly, or indirectly?!?!) Does that mean YOU and I and EVERY artist has STOLEN copyrighted works?! **GASP**!! No, of course not. We learn and synthesise, as the root of our very outdata IP laws means one cannot protect an idea, of the tangible result of an idea. AI is learning and synthesising, it can just do this at a scale greater than every human on the planet. I recognise the tension in AI. It is highly disruptive, and there are a lot of con-artists (see what i did there?) as there is a quick buck to be made, and easy to pass off. It is great for hobbyists, and learners who want endless inspiration to make things for enjoyment - I've generated things to use for inspiration pieces, does that make me a bad artist? Finally, do you think Disney care about AI, or do they care about their bottom line... I wonder if they are or will use it themselves for efficiencies, whilst also shutting down the competition that threatens their wallets. If we are totally honest, i think the crux of this is money. Disney want to protect their money. You want to protect your money. I want to protect mine - but I mainy paint as a hobby, and sell as a sideline through local galleries. Not so worried for myself, but I can see why artists who depend on their art as a livelyhood are worried. Ultimately, this is a highly disruptive, highly complicated field, with a few obvious examples of bad people doing naighty things. There is also a massive swathe of a grey area, of people doing amazing and harmless things pushing boundaries and innovation. Sure, there is a huge "Yuck factor" among us artists, but if we push past that, there is great value for us a tool too. I've been exposed to styles I wasn't even aware of, and that has helped me tinker and experiment with my own styles and medium. Everyone has an imagination, not everyone has the ability to get that out of their mind in a way they want, so in that sense are artists just gatekeeping because "Hey, i've been to college and spent hundreds/thousands of hours on my skills!"?? We need to accept that the world moves on regardless - that doesn't mean fall over and blindly accept AI, but lets also recognise this is a complicated conversation.
