Never mind the lost jobs (not that that is okay by any means) but using public roads as training grounds for unproven technology is absolutely insane, especially when we are talking heavy semis. When I was in college many decades ago, taking AI classes and dreaming and investigating what it would take to make self-driving vehicles, (back then we were working on carts with video cameras and computers in school hallways), never in my wildest dreams did I think such things would be put on public roads without decades of testing first, on closed-circuit proving grounds and/or private, closed off streets. And now we hear Musk plans to put his "self-driving" Teslas into service in Austin as robo-taxis in June of this year. We already know his Telsa "self-driving" technology is completely unsafe and hasn't gotten anywhere near the amount of testing and training miles needed. It's highly irresponsible for these to be on the road. It's just going get people killed. I for one will not be stepping foot in Texas anytime soon because of this. Why the state and city governments are going along with this is beyond me. CEOs of companies putting these on public roads should be held personally liable for any damage they cause, and if they harm or kill people, the CEOs should be put in jail. That would make them think twice about what they are doing. As it is, they seem to be personally protected by corporate liability laws -- a recipe for disaster when coupled with greed. On the other hand, Google's Waymo taxis are now in service in many cities, including where I live. Now, while I don't like these being on the road, at least these went through 15ish years of testing and millions of miles of training. We used to laugh at them when we saw them slowly crawling around in our city back in 2011. But at least Waymo put in the work, and are using Lidar and radar, etc, as well as video cameras --- the things that are necessary to have any hope of making these safe.
