As someone studying CS, I hate the direction Machine Learning has been taking, ML is a wonderful technology, which can help us understand things that we thought were beyond the bounds of the computable problems, and yet we are using it to half do the things that make us humans.
Contrary to the tech bros belief, GenAI doesn’t “learn” like humans, because instead of mixing personal experience with external influence from the past art, it just memorizes some tags and computes the probability of each pixel being a certain color given the prompt. While in real art there’s intention in every stroke, AI “art” is just probability mush that tries to get the set of pixels that “better” satisfies the prompt.
To end my Ted Talk, tech bros missed the entire point of creating art, I don’t draw because I want something pretty (if that were the case I wouldn’t draw ‘cause I’m bad at it lol), I draw because it’s a way of putting my feelings in order and representing them in paper, I draw to show my appreciation and admiration of people, I draw to share with the world my point of view, all things that a machine can’t do.
