"I got really good at lying...I started to enjoy it...I started to prefer it" "[the Tech Lords of Silicon Valley] it's like they've seen a ghost" "...they want humanity to go extinct" It's a Ring of Power. Considering the technology through the lens of this extended Tolkien metaphor (I'd call it allegory, but JRR would not appreciate that) - it can be quite edifying. It comes so naturally, the mythic maps on to the territory of potential reality with frightening consistency. Then again, if you want to see a pattern, chances are you will. It could be done with The Terminator instead of LOTR. It could be done with the Death Star and SW. I'm sure there are others. However, while there is a "chance of death" with AI, there's no such uncertainty with the coming collapse. The gathering storm is real and suitably mythic. Climate change isn't the main factor - *overshoot* is what guarantees our near-terminal extinction. Our Doom. What comes out of Silicon Valley - our Mordor - and how we choose to respond to it is the choice that may determine if we can save the pockets of wild nature necessary for a thriving, living planet after Civilisation and humanity's demise or if we go out as enslaved and leave a wasted, blasted, sterile legacy. And it's less about the potential for SuperIntelligence or some AGI god, and more to do with the human elements, such as they are. The potential for systemic dehumanising effects on the users, the nihilistic intentions of the power-obsessed AI Lords. The possibility of a large portion of humanity who will not be able, or permitted, to access the levers of this new Tech Power and instead may become a new kind of underclass, submitting not to an Iron Heel but instead to a SkyNet, a fragmented, semi-autonomous Death Star, a panoptic Eye of Sauron with a technological Ring of Power around a dying Middle Earth. One fact that stands out is the source of AI's alleged creativity - the data. Tolkien conceptualized the original evil of his myth, the Satan analogy, as being fundamentally incapable of a creative or even sub-creative act. Evil cannot authentically create, and can only introduce *discord* and *error* into the world - a note of disharmony that gets integrated into the world as a permanent, dissonant flaw. Like hallucination becoming part of the cosmos itself. Fidelity cannot be guaranteed where error is always a possibility - with no fidelity/reality-testing, competent human intelligence to check, the error can persist and magnify. But the analogy goes further; the vast amount of data that goes into this "grown" technology originated with us, the internet users who had our browsing, posting, buying, mapping, uploading - our everything - scraped and poured like fuel into this simulated cognition. Purloined knowledge, stolen fragments of work done by minds chained by a manipulative algorithm to an illusion of social relations. The Ring in LOTR has a kind of pseudo-life to it. Its maker, having manipulated and coerced the skill and labour necessary to forge the rings, "supercharged" the metal by pouring his evil will into it and, with the One Ring on his hand and the rest on the hands of those who fell for his ruses, was able to turn their wills to submit to his own - analagous to a manipulative technology fueled by the billions of fragments of individual wills encoded as data, enslaving the wills of the men who wore rings to the master will of the One. The alchemy analogy is apt. And, listening to some of the language from some of the controlling interests, they are aware of what roles they are playing and they embrace it. On the weapons, surveillance, and "services" side, they even named themselves for an evil, corrupted magic technology. AI is a Ring of Power Put it on, and you'll gain increased power and advantage - at first. You will have the equivalent of hundreds, thousands of cognitive slaves boosting that power. It will be analagous to the increased muscle power we gained with access to fossil fuels & the ability to exploit that energy. Except in this case, the powerful gains fuelled by the data, harnessed to the technological superstructure, will not be as evenly distributed as with fossil fuels. Those who use it will become part of a new dominant class, a powerful new elite. But in doing so they will begin to lose their unique, natural capacities, competence, skills. It's already happening. It's happened to all of us at a lower level, just by outsourcing to the algorithm and the regular net. That is inevitable, ordinary corruption - nothing we consciously chose - this is different. Their language will become less and less their own. Their thoughts will be dominated by the AI. The richness of their internal lives will be depleted, as the relentless logic of path-of-least-resistance guides their thoughts and actions. They may believe they wear a Ring. The truth is, it always ends up wearing you. They will begin to resemble each other in every way. They will live, in a very real sense, in a different world. A thin, sterile, faded world. A fake, dead world. A Necro world. Their wills may cease to be, in any meaningful sense, their own. They may have *volition* but the more they exercise that volition in the service of the Will to Power that owns, rules, and controls the tech, the more infrequently they will need to model other, embodied, natural minds, and the easier it will be for them to turn that volition towards acts of cruelty and violence against those natural intelligences. They will have no *fidelity* left in them. The richness and fullness of their natural souls will fade. They will seem less vibrant. More robotic. Less alive, uncanny - they will be Tech-Wraiths. Wraiths who were once men. Bound to the Will - the mighty, surveillance Eye, of the Techno-Necromancer. Call him what you want. I call him "Civilisation". Call it a fiction, a myth. Call it a spooky coincidence. Call it superstition. I recognise a mythic narrative when I see one. I know my Jung, my Campbell, and my Mumford. I know how this story ends and why it exists. These stories become real when history is ending. When an age goes under, when the damage and disrespect, done by Man, to the natural world, comes back to us thousandfold. It's always this way. Tolkien knew it, he sensed it, channelled it, translated and inscribed this wisdom in his work. You will feel the urge to dismiss this as "just pretend". We become who we pretend to be. The wisdom is in the recognition of that fact. We are the story-telling ape, and this is one of our oldest and most fundamental stories. It's baked into our cultures, language, and art. It's part of what makes us "us". We can't help but realise it. The ultimate performance, the greatest show on earth, played out on a stage that's collapsing beneath our feet. There's no stopping the collapse. No fixing the climate. No "green technology", no net zero, and no restoring and rejuvenating the vast, VAST mass of vanished Biome. We have had our way with Gaia - now she will repay in kind. As the collapse takes hold, we cannot stop it but we can choose how to respond, we can choose whether there will be a chapter in this Eschatology for the defense of life, goodness, and decency. those who resisted - for those who had the courage of hopelessness, the resolve of fearlessness, and the wisdom to understand that, while we cannot fight this collapse, we can accept the call to the real fight: on the battlefield of Spirit. To march towards Doom as friends, and free. Or to go as wilful slaves. Good. Evil. Natural intelligence, life. Artificial power, death. The difference between the two is where we live. We were *made for this* We choose to be the calm in the storm, caring for each other and protecting the wild nature that we haven't already destroyed - we can choose compassion, courage and Fellowship Or the Ring. "The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is now gone for none now live who remember...."
