Technology does not remain the same, it will always be improved (except I guess at Tesla for autonomous driving). Because most people's comments do not appear to have a basic understanding of the different types of LiDAR, I included a brief explanation. First, there was 2D LiDAR which is just a single horizontal plane for mapping and navigation in controlled environments, then came 3D LiDAR, and now 4D LiDAR, and 5D LiDAR is already being currently developed. Next, to understand the difference between the best LiDAR that is currently available (3D LiDAR and 4D LiDAR), 3D LiDAR captures static three-dimensional space, while 4D LiDAR adds the dimension of time, allowing it to measure velocity and track movement. 3D LiDAR system creates a "point cloud" of objects in a scene, essentially a snapshot of its surroundings. In contrast, 4D LiDAR provides real-time tracking of movement by detecting the velocity of each point. We are just at the embyronic stages of Level 3 autonomous (hands-free) driving, before we can get to Level 4 and ultimately Level 5 autonomous driving, technology will need to improve even further. Tesla's 2019 camera-only technology will never be able to be approved for Level 4 or Level 5 autonomous (hands-free) driving, unless at some point in the future Musk adds some form of advanced lidar (3D, 4D, 5D). Final point, currently Mercedes makes the only 2 vehicles equipped with Level 3 autonomous (hands-free) driving for purchase and use in the US, but they can only be used in the state of Nevada and some parts of California on specific roads and only in low-speed traffic conditions.
