Microbiology is a lot more than just microscopy. Sure a machine and AI can run many of the tests necessary for ID. But automation would have a very hard time reviewing patient information, antibioitic suceptibilities, resistance genes, spotting abnormalities and inconsistencies (which there are a lot of). You will always need experts that dont operate in black and white, because everything doesnt have a deinitive solution. We see a lot of run of the mill stuff that can and is automated, but we always review it. We find discrespancies all the time and there are issues that just dont have automated solutions.
