I dunno...maybe I'm missing the point here, but here's my impression about this "controversy". Certain people are experiencing the "vise-grip tight underwear feeling" because a machine, manipulated by human instructions, is outputing the results that a few of us within the global society are not particularly happy with. It's akin to being in Las Vegas and expecting the slot machine to hit the jackpot every time you are playing...simply because of who "you" are, what "your" expectations are from that particular slot machine, and the slot machine is not supposed to give a good goddamn about other players, the laws of probability, or the given consideration of the preferences of other players similar to yours. Before this "controversy", everyone thought it was purely shyts & giggles when AI spewed out all kinds of low-class, low-brow textual results about certain ethnicities. But!...when the chickens came home to roost, and a certain segment of the globe's population got a taste of AI's "dark side", it now becomes a very sincere & troubling issue about its potential for future applications of all types. I personally think a lot of people frustrated with this latest "controversy" involving the technological potential of artificial intelligence have been been comfortably and casually evasive while surfing through constant denial of the existence of "others", as well as being comfortably ignorant, arrogant and self-justified in their denial of historical imagery of "others" that was here way before the conceptual idea of artificial intelligence technology. They say that "image is everything." But I guess in this case, images, especially the wrong ones, can be psychologically troubling for some of us. It will be interesting to see how this technology will be manipulated for better or worse in the future...
