As a software engineer with 20+ years experience, it's about time the media finally caught up to what we've all been saying.
AI coding isn't bad, it's a tool, like a calculator. Like any tool it needs to be used correctly and it's limitations understood. I use Claude everyday, but it hasn't improved the turnaround time of pull requests. It's just a tool that is useful for completing tasks freeing up a bit of time to review other work, etc. I still need to review the AI code and adjust.
To anyone who claims that AI will replace engineers (at least in the foreseeable future) I'll repeat the same claim: Writing code is by far the easiest part of the job. Software Engineering is mostly about problem solving and contextualizing. Writing code is just the end step of a series of cognitive intense work that needed to be done prior. That cognitive work crosses many domains including technical, user experience, cost vs time (and a whole host of other tradeoffs), etc.
