This argument is ridiculous. As usual the speaker fails to define her terms and succumbs to multiple logical fallacies. For example she refers to the concept of "surveillance capitalism" without defining what capitalism even is - at least according to her. In order to have clear and precise thinking on any given topic we need clear and precise context which means clear and precise definitions and examples. Capitalism is a social system - it is the social system in which individual rights (including property rights) are protected by Government, and in which *all* property is privately owned, and therefore we can say that it is the exact opposite of socialism. That is a controversial definition of capitalism but it is one with which i agree with. But hey, that is something more than what you got from Zuboff. Now onto her one of her key logical fallacies. She equates economic power with political power, but it is important to bear in mind that these are two complete different types of power. In a free market i.e. under capitalism, economic power is accrued by voluntarily means. A baker bakes a cake and sells it to his customer who voluntarily trades his money for the cake because he wants the cake more than his cash. Economic power is the result of win-win transactions. In a free market someone can only gain large amounts of economic power by the continual production of goods and services which we all value. Now contrast this with political power which is what our MPs have. Political power is the power to control people. It is the power to force and coerce through regulation and legislation. It is the power to create laws and then enforce those laws with a police force and military. It makes no difference whether you disagree with the law/regulation, if you violate it, however irrational the law might be you will be taken off to prison against your will.
Business has no power, *NO* POWER, to force you to use their service or buy their product. It cannot coerce you to do something that you do not want to do. Only the State has that power. Therefore, the threat to liberty can only emanate from Government/Parliament. Wealthy Individuals can "buy off" politicians but that is because politicians allow themselves to be bought off; they hold the power to force and coerce and they are responsible for how it is used.
If you are concerned about liberty what you want is better protection of the individual from the state i.e. you want individual rights objectively defined, protected and enforced by Government. Not only do you want protection from your neighbour, but most importantly you want protection from the institution that can compel you to sit in a prison cell.
