This guest may know a lot about AI but he very obviously doesn’t know much about human beings. How much do people pay for a photo of a landscape? How much do they pay for that landscape painted by a skilled painter that no one knows? How much do they pay for a painting that may be less accurate a representation than both the photo and the unknown artist but it was painted by Van Gogh? It matters who does a thing. Photos have their place but the value is in the bespoke art just as mass produced AI products will have their place but human made will still matter to humans and be more highly valued. You could listen to a recording of the greatest orchestra on Earth, does that mean you won’t ever again go and sit down in an auditorium to listen to your local orchestra (or band in the genre of your choice)? Will you still want to go to music festivals and plays? We can buy alcohol and order in food from your favourite restaurant via uber, does that mean you will never want to dine out or go hang at your local bar and chat to the other patrons and the barman you have got to know? Sometimes we want the easy cheap no fuss version and other times we want the unique, authentic human experience that may be rare or one of a kind or it may just be familiar and comforting. Human to human interaction and connection will not only always be wanted, it may well become more highly valued. How many people currently don’t have the resources to pay for anything more than the bare essentials and are missing out on human interaction and experiences. Personally if I could afford massages several times a week I would as I am constantly in pain that is eased by massage. I would much prefer a person to do that than a machine. When it comes to the “meaning crisis” when not having a job but having all your basic needs met, that is just utterly ridiculous. People get meaning from human connection, creativity and personal challenges. Learn an instrument, language, pottery, sport, gardening, how to paint, building bespoke furniture, research philosophy, consciousness, spirituality, science and the meaning of life, travel the world or go find people who are lonely and keep them company. Boring people may get bored but the average person will enjoy connection for connection’s sake and creativity and learning just for the joy of the experience.
