I started drawing frequently at 12 and I was genuinely shit at it until I turned 16. I'm 18 now and even though I draw good, I'm not as consistent as everybody else I meet. I've inspired a few people to pick up art along the way and only one of them stuck with it after trying again and again. His art hasnt improved as fast as mine, but you can see the differences in anatomy and character expressiveness more clearly after he persisted for 2 years. There's something people should understand as well. Criticism, isnt inherently congruent with hate. If a person tells you that you aren't good at art, it is just as they've said. They don't always mean it maliciously or to demean you (you'll know from their tone, expression and actions both in front and behind your back) I actively seek out criticism to improve myself because nowadays people are too soft to tell me the truth for fear of hurting me emotionally. But what they fail to realize is thst my lack of improvement due to their lies also hurts me just as much if not more seeing as I would have been tricked into believing a lie. That person probably does lack talent in art. I lacked talent in art but I was determined to get better and I got good enough eventually using my own unique method of learning. You dont need to go to art school, you dont need to buy specific pens and pencils, you don't need to have the best equipment, you don't need to have a drawing tablet or stylus. You dont need any of that. All you need is the will to do better and the will to accept that you simply cannot do certain things no matter hard you try. I've never went to art school, never bought the best art epuipment (only used normal writing pencils), never had a drawing tablet or stylus (i use my fingers to draw on my phone), I've rarely even used guidelines. There were alot of times during those 6 years that I just wanted to give up because I am my own biggest critic. I always tell myself I cant do something because of "x" reason and "y" cause, but when I push past the internal criticism I eventually got to a point where I was good enough to satisfy myself. TL;DR, All in all, talent does help make good art. But not all good art comes from talent. Look at AI, it has no talent, all it does is repurpose art and recolor it. But the difference between a human and a machine that lacks talent is that a human has originality and that originality is what breaths life into your art, no matter how crappy it is. Because that originality is technically your own brand of talent if you think about it.
