To me a readjustment to intellectual copyright laws is needed to better reflect that the data being processed is the shared common property of humanity. To me its use right now is analogous to extractivism or privatization, where private equity abuses a common resource for its own benefit and the destruction of a common good. This is a collective action problem. This is a collective action problem. there's definitely a bunch of unmeasured effects on these numbers. At any rate, we should consider the qualitative point - these models are trained on human data, often illegally. Such a readjustment and re-evaluation is also the perfect time to correct previous damages, and would be the right time to perhaps start paying for a UBI program (remember this was the reason Andrew Yang proposed one?), and I would think the AI companies profiting off this exploitative behavior should probably pay up. To me the issue really is with the people running and designing these models and corporations. The public does not like what they are doing, since it is clear all the wonders of human civilization are being abused and monetized. Why shouldn't we all benefit from that? And I mean in money, not in "added value" of having tools that reorganize our data and pretend this is something sentient. As best I understand, these models need good quality data from humans in order to continue operating, since they process their own output as well and that degrades their work as a result (Ouroboros effect?). Deep waste of natural resources since well trained human at least has the chance of improving without more data to be ingested and water boiled to power it. So, what is with this video? Who cares about the dollars involved, this is about doing the right thing, even if it kneecaps a burgeoning industry. Let other countries feed their culture and society into the shredder for free.
