When ChatGPT says it’s “excited,” all it means is that it predicts that excitement is a word that is likely plausible and engaging at the moment, and uses the term “I” as a practical linguistic tool. Just using the term “I” doesn’t imply selfhood, in the same way that using the term “I’m excited” doesn’t literally imply a subjective experience of excitement (although it usually does when a human says it).
