The fault here was not in using ChatGPT, or any other automated tool. The fault was in NOT CHECKING WHAT IT PRODUCED. And that's what these lawyers will need to answer for. Getting ChatGPT to do some research for you is no worse than getting an assistant or intern or whatever to do it. An intern is probably unlikely to make up cases, but, hey, you never know, if they feel under pressure to produce something quick and they're going to be off in a week anyway, maybe they would. The point is, cutting and pasting some intern's work into your response is as bad as cutting and pasting from ChatGPT. Use these tools by all means, but you need to READ and CHECK what they produce, incorporate it with your other research, and OWN the resulting response.
