As an American who constantly hears other Americans terrified of China winning the AI race... US citizens along with the rest of the world should be far more afraid of a US-led AI race. Look at the track record of the USA and of China in the past 100 years and tell me which of those countries is the "good guy". China raised hundreds of millions of its own people out of poverty and became a world superpower and leader within the course of a single generation. Hate on socialism all you want, once the employment rate reaches 20-30% and a large majority of the population is struggling, Americans will be ready to embrace socialism faster than you can say Marx. If 20% of Chinese people go unemployed due to AI, you better believe the country is going to do what it can to use technology and its resources to take care of those people. In the USA, the political and corporate leaders of the technocracy couldnt care less about 20% of americans quickly going homeless and hungry. They see the American people as cannon fodder and chattel and despite all of the benefits technologty and AI will bring, none of that will actually trickle down and help or benefit everyday people like it would in most other countries outside of the US.
