For one: we mostly see this framed as "A.i. is going to take all the jobs", - like its just picking jobs up and throwing them into the Sun? - no - on a good day* a.i. (and virtual project management and proposal development) are boosting productivity, presumably that can mean more stuff and lower cost, maybe lower price - depending on the Board and Voting Investors, - if all we're only using a.i. & robo & virtual to make more junk while more and more people are starving and homeless, that sucks, but that does open the opportunity for RoboMegaCorp - or better shops / co-ops / guilds / union shops / non-profits / political proposals to meet demand + a.i. & robo & virtual & etc. to boost productivity for cheap or subsidized housing, medical, food, parks, therapy & etc. (or non-profits / cities / states can hire shops / co-ops to do more for cheaper - if we understand how that can be done, all the better with virtual demonstrations & education & training & network support, and so on). - Just as well - very little discussion that consumers, investors, workers, contractors, city contracts & etc. - some of those do have some choice - we can buy candles from the Amish and support local (human) theatre if we want, or some reasonably good middle-ground good shops + a.i. for Good doing good things + employing people, well - buying everything from / investing-in Evil Robo MegaCorp is not inevitable. - again, professional networks and credit unions can do a lot of good work there with peer-review and network support to the Good + proposals + make it easy for outsiders to see the more ethical options in their field to buy from and so on. - Of course that's not going to all get done perfectly overnight, but there are enough groups and organizations and credit-unions and grad-student networks and non-profits and so on, some are not evil, more can be done with more participation and connection and help from professionals and peer-networks & etc. - At that, it's toxic how every discussion of this gets swamped with "we need UBI", and the discussion ends there. At present, if you gave my neighbors $1k/month UBI, they'd hand that over to walmart and car payments and chevron and a bunch of junk off of amazon. Though I do have some confidence that some of those will go on to help with community service projects and non-profits and new shops and innovation, doubly so after some time to re-center and study and get involved in professional networks & etc. - if it take a year to get better housing shop or non-profit going and some time after that to distribute, that's a lot of suffering angry people in the meanwhile, while SuperRoboMegaCorp is getting handed trillions of dollars per month, and probably using media and social media to make elections happen their way, at least. Anyway, there are better and worse ways to do UBI, let's map those out, compare, refine.. then I can show how non-profits would be good to have, to support now, all the better with cooperative networks of these (and if 'a.i. does all the work' to make non-profit housing and medical and healthy food go 10x, that's fine.) - "we need UBI" (and that's it) is a Magic Wand Dream that seems to distract away from the diet and exercize needed to support and build healthy networks and systems beyond RoboMegaCorpGroup owning everything + owning politics.
