I know I'm late for the show, and I'm not even sure if my lukewarm take is even welcome, but here it goes: The AI incentive in a nutshell is that business people are currently currently forced to pay an artist to produce a 'stupid design' on a 'stupid shopping bag' for a 'stupid holiday', and they tend to think that artists are "obnoxious egotistical parasites who masturbate over their fine-tuned motor skills, and rip off their clients, and slack off while disregarding the deadlines." So your skills are objectively valuable, but others will generally just want your products and services; and if someone can produce results at a way lower cost, in a way shorter timespan, with way less effort and overall risk by utilizing the garbage an AI spits out, they absolutely will. However, this demand for mass production undeniably kills the soul of everything it touches. This is why real art, where form and function find a perfect balance will never be replaced by kitsch (design intended to sell the product it is presented on), but this is also why real craftsmanship by now got tucked away into "traditional workshops" that satisfy the occasional need for souvenirs, gifts, movie props and unique items. I also understand how mortifying this is for any beginner artist in training, as the same thing is threatening software developers as well: The gap between marketable skills and "theoretical knowledge" widens. A similar example cropped up today in a YouTube video where I learned the formula to calculate the square root of any number on paper - and it's an ancient technique that's still used even by modern computers! Now we study abstract, seemingly arbitrary concepts of mathematics, with almost no examples, and zero explanation of how or why the operations and processes we write our tests from were invented in the first place. While I believe that technology is a wonderful facet of our culture that allows us to functionally democratize a lot of things, I still think it's very dangerous to lose the roots of our wisdom and skills, be it sciences, crafts or arts; and I don't know what could be effectively done to keep the balance between blazing forth with the new, while we kindle the embers of the old.
