I think the mistake and issue here was no so much using ChatGPT, but the fact that the lawyer didn't do ANY checking up on the information that ChatGPT gave him.
It's like going to Google to solve your windows issue, then following the instructions on the page that showed up, even when they don't make any sense or aren't possible all because you failed to see that the page you went on was to solve a Mac issue. The problem wasn't really with the computer, it was with the human failing to understand how computers work and their limitations.
