I actually lost my job to AI a few years back. I was a textbook writer, straight out of college, and I made like $10 an hour thanks to being a contractor. My boss wasn't fluent in English and didn't know what a semicolon was, and forced me to write lessons on grammar with improper grammar because he didn't like that someone so low on the totem pole thought they knew better. My entire department got replaced with generative AI, then about 4 months later we got emails asking us to reapply. No one explicitly said that the AI we were replaced with sucked too much to do our jobs, but it was kind of obvious. But we were being offered the exact same pay as before, even though corporate had just been forced to admit that they NEEDED us, and that we were irreplaceable. I didn't take the job back.
