I'm a writer born in the 80's. AI has ruined a lot of spelling and grammar checkers. They worked far better 20 years ago. No I am not kidding. AI grammar checking will flatten your voice and make far more errors than the older versions. Instead of being based on actual grammar rules, flagging coloquialisms or non-standard uses so you know when you are taking risks, it will try and guess your tone and adjust to what it thinks you are trying to do. It's so squishy! It isn’t doing what you might expect or want it to do, and that's just for spelling and grammar error detection. Having the first draft done for you is an entirely different ball of wax, and _SHAME_ on NaNoWriMo for aupporting the idea that generating a draft to edit is at all acceptable for a young or aspiring writer. AO3 didn't ban AI generated fanfic to encourage people to tag it accurately (yay exclude filter) and I've seen a lot of cheap romance novels that are clearly AI generated with the fastest of first draft editing done get shoveled out to flood the ebook market. Anti-scrape for novels is hard because some tools break text to speech and accessibility is important. I have speech problems, I cannot record my own audiobooks/podfic as an alternative.
