When I was a young man (I'm a few years, but ONLY a few years younger than Dave...) the fear was that automation was going to cause people to lose jobs. And sure--it did. But the other thing that automation did was massively increase productivity. I look at the outcome of AI to be along a similar line... it will cause some jobs to disappear, but the end result will be exponentially faster, scalable solutions made with the same or similar number of human workers. We'll pick up a few jobs on the side of training and rolling out AI, but overall the total amount of work being done scales with the ability of AI to do new, extra work. In the end, there are people moving into other jobs, but for humankind we see an exponential increase in the amount of "stuff" that can be done with the same number of resources from the past.
