My personal experience in AI. I am 61 years old, and worked my way up the ranks from CAM operator to various other technical fields to Application Manager. Our company produces test equipment for the pcb and substrate industry, our equipment cost about 300 to 500k usd per machine. We are dealing with systems that have legacy code from 15 years still in use. Needless to say our data structure is complex and bloated. But I understand it, the process and the operation of the equipment very well. What I am not is a programmer or as you call them now a developer. I started playing with AI when Deepseek came out. Creating a few small utilities in python to make my job easier. It worked, I then moved on and used Gemini Ultra to do this. And it was great, with the larger context window I could easily drop my complete code base for a program inside the window, tell it what i needed and it would spit out 9 out of 10 times exactly what I wanted. This has lead to about 30 programs that are of small to medium complexity that our service and application engineers use now daily. Even software that is utilized by the customer on the factory floor. Customers now want integration with SECS/GEM and other and this again was a relative new thing to us and me. But using AI I was able to intergrade these request in days for no cost while quotations for this reached in the 100k range by outside services. I tailored the software to custom request from customers in minutes, things that would have taken our software department month. I tied complex data sets from various sources that contained limited documentation together to create a database output that was actually workable. All of this without any coding knowhow then the 40 years ago basic language courses from school. So AI programming has expanded the services and tools we use in our company by allot. Now of course these are not enterprise systems that serve tens of thousands of customers, but they are still important software packages that improved productivity and allowed us to sell hundreds of machines to our customers. So I personally find AI very useful and productive. Its especially great when you pair it with somebody that understands the technical requirement of a process. I love my little AI Slave that works without complain and sizzy fits day and night on the projects i need it to at no cost.
