Carmack is very bright and grew up at a time when he needed to think. By contrast, AI might cut into the ability to develop people capable of understanding our tech environment. In the past, you could get a job with 90 IQ. An information economy titled things towards 120. But if AI requires 140 or requires altering the pipeline of education (less humanities and more tech), then we'd be struggling to keep pace if we ever did have to understand its reasoning.
The human brain wasn't built for its current demands. I think it has hard and fast limits.
