NaNoWriMo's entire argument is just entirely, objectively, untrue, and misses the point of all the criticism by a long shot. Technically all the challenge is (or, at least, should be) about is the process of you, personally, writing a manuscript within the month of November. Doesn't have to be edited or reviewed, doesn't have to be completed on a specific medium (i.e. digital or handwritten), doesn't even necessarily have to be "good". The whole point is to just sit down and WRITE - that's it! That's all you have to do! If you manage to finish and achieve the word count goal, then the challenge is complete! Editing, reviewing, publishing, etc, come AFTERWARD, and do NOT pertain to the challenge itself. The idea that someone needs AI to do these things, that aren't necessary at all, is so wrong, and would still be wrong even if those things were involved in the challenge. Honestly, if those were a requirement, that'd make the whole thing substantially less viable to a lot of writers who would otherwise want to participate. As someone who's attempted NaNoWriMo several times and failed (due to, who would've guessed, disabilities affecting the time it takes for me to do things), I vehemently disagree with every single thing they said in defense of AI. It's been years since I've heard anything about or related to this program; really discouraging to know that what used to be a fun way to encourage creatives to create (that I learned about and participated in as a teenager through school writing clubs) has been commodified to hell and back.
