To a point I wonder if the argument is whether or not we care about human expression or content to consume. I wouldn’t consider ai image generation to be art. But it does fulfill the same market niche as art does in a consumerist economy. And in an increasingly inhuman world dictated by sales data and money, I can see why many would be willing to turn to ai. However I think the best argument against this is one you mentioned. That without continuous input from artists, image generation is doomed to collapse. Because image generation will put artists out of business as a natural consequence of its popularity, which will severely reduce the amount of art available to integrate. Essentially, starving itself and leading to its own collapse. Kind of fitting for the market that’s required to support it.
