I agree with pretty much everything you've said, but I just want to chime in that for me and my friends the meme examples they gave were very similar to the kind of jokes we make. Obviously It's not *exaaactly* the same, but it's something that I've come to really appreciate about the relationships I have with my friends. The football example where they made an AI image of someone's hands literally being made of butter isn't far off at all from the kinds of jokes we would make. We spent an ungodly amount of time handrawing/photoshopping/what have you those same kinds of dorky images. Kind of adjacent, we would just imagine something crazy (e.g. The accursed Ron Perlman flesh toilet) and draw it into being. The examples they gave were definitely really weird and cringe, but it gets the idea across I think. For me, part of the fun of that stuff was looking back and asking each other "really, you spent 3 hours on this?". I'm not sure I would enjoy it as much (or for as long) if the process of actually making the art wasn't the foundation of the experience.
