In the past, technology changed jobs over generations. A horse buggy driver could finish his career—even with increasing economic hardship—while his son became the taxi driver. Coal miners' sons became lawyers, and farmers' sons became doctors. The issue with AI is that someone just one year into their career can see their entire sector displaced overnight. These people have often incurred massive student debt training for a profession, only to be told to "just learn a new skill" that might also become obsolete in a few years. Remember how Hillary Clinton’s (technically valid) but seemingly callous comments about coal miners hurt her campaign? That’s the issue here. AI makes jobs obsolete at a sub-quarterly or even sub-monthly rate. While some motivated learners will thrive, not everyone has the wherewithal to constantly reinvent themselves in that kind of environment.
The AI companies have a lot of money. It is imperative on them to make education free and prepare the employable people adaptive with free guaranteed retraining. Second thing they need to underwrite is energy production. They have enough money.
