I work in HE in the UK. Here the cost of living for students is so high and the support from the government so bad that more students than ever are having to pick up part time work to support themselves. If writing your essays with chatgpt frees you up to take enough shifts to pay your rent/eat/train ticket to actually attend your classes, then I'm not sure I can blame them.
