You are right. I started learning how to make characters in blender and all the real references I use are far more helpful than the AI art I had generated. The only benefit I got from the AI art was that it was quick to make lots of different versions (using the same prompt each time but generating over and over) and then picking the parts I liked then combining them together. I probably could have done the same with real art though. When I was modeling, I also realized how busted each piece I was referencing was. They turned out more like a reference of a silhouette. Something to look at the whole of rather than try to recreate any aspect from it. It made the idea I had a little more solid and let me put words into art and see if I liked it quickly. I think if i drew it myself it would be more my style and closer to what I wanted but I wanted to work on 3D modeling not drawing. The 3d model itself is pretty different from the reference and I think if I had just drawn the silhouette i could've had an easier time going from reference to model. I think it could have a place but everyone is searching for that but its not really something people want to admit its good for. I used it as a subpar skeletal guide but when anyone can learn how to do art it doesnt seem like its place is in art but rather lazy/easy creation for personal things or to help people figure out what is useful to give an artist when attempting to create a piece for them. Communication can be hard when you are trying to pin down an abstract thought so it can help make iterations so non artistic people can communicate what they want easier but I think thats probably the best case scenario.
