In Australia we have welfare (Centrelink) and so many people just use it for McDonalds, alcohol, drugs and just waste it to be honest, not all, I was once on it, it wasn't enough to thrive on, it was a good safety net if you need it and get let go from a job to catch you for a few weeks, although very annoying and sometimes difficult to get, takes a lot of effort to startup
I see UBI the same way, there should be incentive to participate somehow with these bigger companies and if you do you should get rewarded accordingly, merit still exists, but ai will remove many who simply don't want to work, this can be both good and bad
