I built some of the first chat bots in the late 1990's. That was just simple code. What we have now is far more than code; it is powerful maths, and even more powerful processor engineering (e.g., words converted into math vectors and processed at unimaginable speeds within neural networks with billions of nodes). The human brain has billions of neurons with trillions of connections, but signals travel at only 700Mph (1126Kph). Computer circuits transmit at or near light speed (6.7e8 Mph).
If consciousness is a property of complex neural networks, as is the predominant belief among neuroscientists, then it is not only possible but probable some AIs could already be conscious, at some level. I believe eventually, as their power and complexity increase, AI will achieve levels of consciousness we humans can not begin to comprehend.
