AI has already has massive deleterious consequences in the real world, because it has been used by people oblivious to the consequences of the way they used it. Social media is driven by AI algorithms. The feedback loop of confirmation bias that social media uses to ensure their capture of our attention is directly responsible for the extreme polarization of politics in society and the promotion and entrenchment of some possibly civilization-destroying ideas. This would not have happened without social media and that confirmation bias-enhancing mechanism.
