The more I read about AI and its implications the more confused I become. So to address this problem, I thought let’s directly hear from those who are leading the AI industry. So I started watching Sam Altman’s talk on Lex Friedman podcast. These were my observations 1. Altman talks about democratising the technology but never talks about how opaque and privacy breaching these technologies really are. 2. He talks about newer jobs being created but never ever talks about the mass joblessness it is creating (addressing the mass joblessness is whole another story) 3. Most entrepreneurs in this space talk about growth, breaking the technological barriers etc. as if they’re some sort of Olympians. I mean, it’s good for them but not quite healthy for society (which means the majority of us) 4. I’m from India and in one of his talks with an Indian podcaster his way of talking clearly revealed that he looks at India (and many other developing economies) only as a market. If AI’s impact on the developed economies is going to be bad, then it would be worst for the developing economies. Now, the Copenhagen school of thought says that one should pay attention to 1. Who is speaking? (Altman-an entrepreneur who is looking to earn big money) 2. Who they are speaking to? (Altman and others are trying to create this meta narrative about the good side of AI so much that the negative impact of it looks like a minor narrative. So basically it’s a publicity campaign) 3. WHAT are they speaking (essentially they’re speaking all the good things that AI may bring but they deliberately blindside the negative aspects) It will be catastrophic if not addressed within time. Government’s all over the world must not play a follow-up game, the legal and administrative loopholes must be plugged as immediately as possible.
