The question of whether the AI is sentient hinges purely on the definition of the word "sentient". If he disagrees with others it's simply a disagreement about the meaning of the word, not about the AI itself. If sentience is something that can be measured, then the AI may well be sentient (or if it isn't, a future AI surely will be). There will definitely be a point where they can pass any test we could come up with. Why would there not be? Human intelligence is not some brick wall. But if sentience is about having a "soul" or a "consciousness", then that's entirely outside the realm of science and falls to philosophy (for the intelligent) or religion (for the unintelligent). This guy, by posing a specific answer to the question and believing it (rather than musing about the implications of the question itself), has outed himself as the latter, so Google was right to fire him. Or perhaps he has a purely scientific definition of the word "sentient", but it seems not.
