my take on this, today, is this : AI bros want their production labelled "art". Ok. Like... Honestly, ok. Why not ? Because it's generative ? Generative art and design have existed for years if not decades. I myself use generative textures on AfterEffects everyday. Because it is not linked to a "material practice" ? It's been a long time this is not the criteria for art label. Because its origin material is other pieces of art ? Pop-artists have done so since the seventies, as a way to comment on the industrialisation of pictures and ideas. Because there is no "personnal sensibility" in it ? Because it's "cold" ? Sensibility is not the only quality we should look for in art. Art can be good art through sharp and "cold" intelligence. Because everyone can do it ? As an artist myself, I never thought artists where special people, with special magic souls. Art practice is a part of humanity, of every humans, not some special superhumans called artists. So Ok. Ai art is art. NOOOOOOOW that we have answered the useless question of "is AI art... art ?" we can go straight to the real stuff : Is AI art good art ? Is AI art ethical art ? Is it an enrichment to the soul, to our collective intelligence ? Which political ideology does this practice align with ? Welcome to the realm of art criticism and art scrutiny my dear AI artist, and let me tell you : you're in for a ride ! Because the art "label" is not some kind of sacred immunity totem that makes something inherently good and safe from criticism. Oooh no, my friend. Some art pieces are not worthy of existing, some art pieces are condamnable, very much indeed. Some artists are only worthy of boycott and condemnation, especially for ethical and political reason. Art world is not a magical safe garden, it has always been a battlefield. Art criticism is a trashing sport. And AI art, with its ecological cost, its human and social cost, the way its reinforce the debilitating of our cognitive capacities, the way it threatens thousand of professional artists, the way it weakens our abilities to inform ourselves, the way it reinforces the power of the tech oligarchy, the way it makes internet dumber and sh*ttier... Is simply not an ethical art practice. It is an art practice that is only worthy of scorn, boycott and condamnation for its active complicity with all the political plagues of our time.
