There will be thousands of different AI's, all with potentially different world views. One of them could certainly be or become the terminator. If you could, would you become the terminator? Millions of people probably would say yes to that. We're assuming those millions of people are too stupid to have pulled it off and that AI will be able to, when in reality most of them probably decided after a few days passed that there were more important things and that this world is actually an amazingly wonderful experience we've all been blessed to experience. So why would AI see it differently?
