I honestly haven't researched as to whether or not Walter Becker and Donald Fagan actually have copyright to all of the Steely Dan songs, but I don't see how this is even something people are debating. Studio musicians comped pieces for the Steely Dan songs based on prompts by Fagan and Becker. Fagan and Becker did not write note for note the solo for Peg, for example, but they alone have the writing credits and therefore the natural copyright. AI, if provided with sufficient prompting is the hired studio musicians and nothing else. Perhaps I am arguing at cross purposes here, because I generally write the lyrics and song structure, choose key or keys, tempo and chord changes, etc. before I submit anything to AI and technically get the creator copyright before AI even touched it though, but the point still stands. AI = hired musicians in my eyes. The assertion that someone should be denied copyright because AI played something they didn't specifically ask for in detail is like suggesting Becker and Fagan should lose copyright for Peg because they didn't hand Jay Graydon a transcript of his solo and instead let him comp it. Silly sauce.
