This is a fascinating interview. Hinton declares that he is a materialist. I agree, humans are trapped in their own subjectivity and vastly overestimate their capabilities ( a sort of mass Dunning- Kruger effect). It strikes me that AI can outcompete us intellectually but the question that was not asked was: “Can AI experience joy or the thrill of physical experience.”. This seems to be the only distinguishing factor in favour of humans. The joy of love , the thrill of surfing a wave, the exhilaration of scoring a goal. So we should concentrate on exercising our physicality, finding purpose in human activity. Far better than sitting in a call centre hoping for some fulfilment there. We may well die out as a species having fulfilled our evolutionary destiny by spawning the next level of intelligent being. Earth probably is, as Douglas Adams had it, a super computer. It has supplied the ultimate answer, and the question, and the Vogons have not yet destroyed it with an interstellar bypass. The answer is not 42 - it’s AI. In the meantime let’s all enjoy surfing and loving and playing games before the dolphins leave.
