As with a lot of these sorts of products, generative AI does have some use cases, but tech bros oversell and overhype them to the point of basically outright lies about what it does. Like NFT's: the technology is basically an unfalsifiable(nearly) reciept that you have paid for something. There are totally use cases for that, but they are niche and not crazy profitable. So they convince a bunch of people that buying an NFT is the same as buying a piece of original art, artificially inflate prices to lend a sense of authenticity, and just scam people with it. Which ironically destroys the chance of the real use cases being used due to negative perception. Generative AI has some use cases. I, a person with no skill, nor the time or motivation to learn, use it for my private DnD campaign for things like oneoff monsters or homebrew plants, if I can't find suitable art with a google search. The quality of generative AI simply will never match the quality that can be produced by a human who has put time and effort into learning how to draw, both in terms of originality and accuracy. But the quality is better than someone without the skill can produce, and it will be much faster than any human. So it is useful when you don't mind mediocre quality, and need it quickly. The big issues then are corporate greed and ego. Corporations are happy to put out lower quality content if it's significantly cheaper to produce, leading to lazy companies using AI instead of actual artists to produce what is supposed to be professional content. And people with inflated ego consider themselves 'artists' in the same way as someone who has spent a lot of time learning their craft, which is basically the equivalent of Musk calling himself a pro gamer for paying people to level up his PoE2 character for him.
