To have a self-driving vehicle, you need a rational and well-maintained road system. To get the latter, it would require a $2 trillion investment (at the least) in deferred maintenance, which the U.S. is no longer capable of. Hence, all we can hope for are false promises and the resultant chaos.
Elon Musk is a liar and charlatan. In the 2016 speech quoted in the suit, he says "the radar system in the car . . . will be able to detect that an initiate a braking event." In 2021, Tesla removed all radar from their vehicles, and only recently (2024) re-introduced radar in a limited way in new vehicles. It was demonstrated (and you can see videos of it) during this period that a painting (like the kind illustrated in Road Runner cartoons) would fool the Tesla system, and it would crash into a wall without ever braking. At no time did Musk make public statements about this.
