I study AI and computer vision at University and the reason this happens so often is that a large majority of the training data used for these facial recognition models are Caucasian people so the model has a harder time reading a black person’s facial features due to the often very different facial structure compared to someone of European descent. It seems like a simple fix but it will take years of collecting useable data and even longer to train models to effectively distinguish different faces from people who aren’t part of the Caucasian ethnic group. Edit: it’s also worth noting that on security camera footage, the facial features of darker skinned people are harder to distinguish compared to the facial features of a lighter skinned person, which makes it even more challenging, but not an impossible problem to fix.
