As an artist I have a very complicated opinion about AI art. On one hand I think the technology is really cool, and could be useful for getting inspiration by asking the generative software to combine concepts in ways that I hadn’t considered.
On the other hand, the process is extremely energy intensive, the models are all trained off of existing artists largely without their permission, and it’s very much a for-profit enterprise designed to eventually replace artists to make profit margins go up.
If we didn’t live in a dystopian nightmarescape I would love AI. But we do. So I feel extremely weird and unpleasant about it.
