CGP Grey sums this up well in his "Humans Need not Apply" video.
Think about horses. When cars and tractors started replacing working horses, some horses got to retire to a life of recreation and enjoy the work free life that the new car technology allowed for horses... But most horses cost more to keep alive than they could generate in their own economic value, so they became leather and glue.
Humans who poses the means of automatic production can retire on the profits of automation.
The rest of us are consumers of automation, and when we can no longer provide economic value, why would we be granted a life of luxury by those who need us to consume the output of their automation?
Most humans are but one cog in the machine that is being automated.
