I think the current transformer based AI is close to a dead end, or at least nearing the end of the "boom"... it is a powerful autocomplete, which can be super useful, but it is not a mind. To me, real “artificial intelligence” would mean that systems can form their own goals, reason causally, and learn and act autonomously, and I don't think we are anywhere close to that.
