Automation run amok could lead to not just another Great Depression but the last depression, as the job losses will be permanent. Our government is so influenced by corporate regulatory capture that any UBI will just be whatever crumbs the 1% feels generous enough to throw down to the rest of us. It'll only be a bare minimum to keep our value as consumers and could be taken away for a wide variety of infractions or just on billionaire whims. So the vast majority of people would subsist on tenuous welfare or criminality with no realistic hope of upward mobility. And the 99% would probably revolt but be crushed under the iron fist of largely automated future war machines that aren't accountable to anyone.
This is going to end badly.
