Large Language Models artificially extend their context windows by summarizing what is currently in their context window into a "gist." This is how some LLMs will misunderstand "don't add a pink elephant into my essay" and add a pink elephant into the essay, because the gist left out the "don't" or otherwise mangled the instructions.
