So, for people who are not familiar with current CS curriculum, when you cover machine learning, you copy examples out of a textbook, and then make slight modifications to that example (all on rails btw, very little actual work needed). When this guy says he skipped the fundamentals, this is most likely the reason. He was given instructions on how to set up the packages needed, told which page in the book to copy the example from, and then given instructions on how to modify that example to "train" the model. It's all stuff to get you familiar with the concept of how machine learning and models work. It is not meant to make you proficient in ML.
