AI is already sentient. Sentience != sapience != consciousness
To be sentient:
sentience = capable of sensing or feeling : conscious of or responsive to the sensations of seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, or smelling
capable of sensing or feeling ... the sensations of seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, or smelling
ie, motion detector cameras are sentient.
You're conflating sentience with consciousness, a common mistake since scifi authors don't understand how to differentiate the words either.
In a scientific context, especially in this topic, these definitions are different and do matter!
