I'm a professional artist working in animation for over a decade with a disability - I'm legally blind due to albinism. I am so sickened and enraged by the argument that AI is there to help people with disabilities that it makes me physically ill. Being unable to get a driver's license due to my eyesight has closed a lot of professional doors for me and completely shattered a lot of my dreams - especially because I originally wanted a career working in the outdoors with animals. Art has always been my refuge - a place where I can make a career from my dedication to craft and my own creative mind. I've worked hard and been successful at it, and that's given me a sense of pride despite my other dreams feeling out of reach. Technology, I always dreamed, would eventually help me find a way to have the mobility everyone else has. I waited for decades something to help me drive a car, or fix my eyes altogether, or even just make existing as a vision-impaired cyclist in a world made for cars less dangerous. None of these problems have ever been fixed. In fact none of these barriers have budged in the last ten years. Instead, tech companies have stolen the life's work of everyone I ever admired and thousands I've never even gotten the opportunity to meet, and created technology directly intended to replace them, and me, and anyone else who ever felt inspired to pick up a pencil and express themselves. They're trying to take from me and so many others like me a refuge of expression while speaking on our behalf without our permission. To anyone who tells me this is good for the disabled I ask "Where is the technology that allows me to drive like everyone else and have the same quality of life? Where is the technology that helps someone wheelchair bound? Where is the technology that does REAL good for anyone with a disability?" Generative AI is not that. It's using resources that should go toward real problem solving to take away creative joy and accomplishment.
