this rhetoric is something i see a lot coming from my best friend (thankfully, she doesn't resort to generating ai images). it's both sad because we've been friends since primary school, and i know for a fact that her dad instilled this mentality into her. whenever she expressed interest in picking up creative hobby, her father would end up telling her that she isn't talented, and only talented people can be good artists. on the other hand, it's so dismissive. she tells me how talented and lucky i am, and i've been doing this shit my entire life. i drew a lot as a kid, after i've graduated music school i started going to academic art classes to prepare my portfolio for the architecture school. 4 years of practice in academic art, years of doing art as a hobby, having to do art to some degree in the school, 3 years of work experience as a CGI artist, qualification improvement courses, impromptu naps on my sketches during sleepless nights as i was preparing for another jury—and all of that effort dismissed as talent? now, am i lucky? certainly. but i'm lucky because my family nurtured my creativity and agreed to invest into my improvement, rather than forcing me down the more conventional 'get a degree in something useful, like economics' route. am i talented, though? i doubt talent, even if we accept that such a thing exists would get me anywhere if i didn't spend hours upon hours upon hours refining my art. it's also telling that there are things that i just. can't. draw! i'm good with environments and colors, but ask me to draw a person and i'll be running cold sweat because this is something i lack technical knowledge about at the moment. we've had this conversation for years now. unfortunately, there's no getting through to a person with such a mentality.
